Percy Bysshe Shelley’s and John Keats’s Life copyright paper51.com PercyBysshe Shelley (1792---1822) was born on August 4, 1792, at Field Place, near Horsham in Sussex, into an aristocratic family. His father, Timothy Shelley, was a Sussexsquire and a Member of Parliament. Shelley attended SyonHouse Academyand Eton and in 1810 he entered the Oxford University College. At Eton, he proved a good classical scholar, but was not very happy, for he was by nature revolutionary and unconventional. He was known as ‘mad Shelley’ and ‘Shelley the atheist’, and his enthusiasm forstudies in electricity, chemistry, and astronomy, and the exciting experimentshe conducted, gave rise to many stories. The persecutions which he endured andwitnessed at school gave him a lifelong detestation of tyranny and violence. Inthe following, he wrote many lyric pieces to express his ideas about politics.During the remaining four years of his life, Shelley traveled and lived invarious Italian cities, producing all his major works: Julian and Maddalo (1818), Odeto the West Wind (1819), Adonais(1821), scores of magnificent lyrics, and the major prose essay, http://www.paper51.com |
