Abstract copyright paper51.com
This paper focuses on thecontrasts used in “I Heard A Fly Buzz—WhenI Died”. This poem is one of the most classic poems on death written byEmily Dickinson. Emily Dickinson used a lot of techniques in this poem, such ascontrasts, dashes, capitalization of nouns, and no titling. But the mostimportant technique in this poem is the use of contrasts. Contrast is the basicstructure of this poem. The contrast between “the King” and “the buzz of thefly” is the central one. The whole poem is constructed around this contrast. Ihope this analysis in my paper can help people to understand Emily Dickinson’swriting style and her techniques better. http://www.paper51.com Key words: Emily Dickinson; contrast; fly; death paper51.com

1 Introduction1.1 A brief introduction to Emily Dickinson’s life paper51.com
EmilyDickinson was one of most innovative and unique poets in the history ofAmerican literature, and she also contributed a lot to the world literature aswell. Miss Emily (Elizabeth) Dickinson was born on December the 10 of a familyof Calvinism in Amherst, Massachusetts. (Drabble, Margaret 1993:273-274) Calvinism: a type of Protestant Christianity basedon the ideas of John Calvin. Someone who believes these ideas is a Calvinist.Calvinists are often considered to have strict moral opinions. (Hawkins, JoyceM 1986:123) Her father, Edward Dickinson, was a prominent lawyerand congressman. At the same time he was a man of considerable meansand strong personality. However, her mother, Emily Norcross Dickinson, wasgentle and dependent, devoted to the care of her family until after her husband’sdeath in 1874, when she became an invalid. Emily Dickinson’s mother’srest life was spent on the bed, and Emily Dickinson had taken care of her fornearly four years. When Emily Dickinson talked with her mother, her mother oftengave a silent reply, leaving her think alone. Emily Dickinson’s parents haveplayed important roles in her life as well as her writing style. From her father’s life and experience Emily Dickinsonlearned public speaking, and from her mother’s reply she learned the power ofsilence, as her mother often kept quiet as a reply. (Mednic,Fred 2004:192))She seldom left her home in Amherst and she nevermarried and was single all her life. She was called “Amherst recluse”. (王金娥,2004: 91) Most of her time wasspent on writing poems. Emily Dickinson home was near an orchard, and in theorchard there was a public cemetery. She often saw people attending funeral andheard people singing hymns. Besides, death was always around her. Her twofriends’ deaths, her parents’ deaths, and her little nephew, Elbert’s earlydeath all made her feel very sorrowful.(李公昭,2003:86-89) In 1886, she died quietlyin her home. Before her death, she asked her relatives to burn what she hadwritten during her life. Her relatives found thousand of poems in the house andsent some to the publishing house. Among her 1775 poems, only seven werepublished during her life. paper51.com |
