Introduction http://www.paper51.com Since1980s, the main stream of teaching research andpractice in the world has transformed from teacher-centered to student-centeredand the focus has shifted from knowledge teaching to students’ participationand knowledge development. During this process, more attention has been paid tothe group teaching method and task-centered learning. Under such a situation, ateaching method called task-based language teaching, which is developed fromcommunicative pedagogy, has gained widespread attention in thelanguage-teaching circle in foreign countries. Task-based language teaching is,in fact, a further development of communicative language teaching. They sharethe same belief that language should be learned as closely as possible.However, task-based language teaching has stressed the importance of combiningform-focused teaching with communication-focused teaching. It has beendiscussed and advocated throughout China by English teachers since thepublication of the new English Curriculum Standards (Ministry of Education, July2001). It greatly challenges English professionals in China,especially English teachers, who expect to teach better and make students learnbetter. Trough much practice and research, it has been proved in many schoolsthat task-based language teaching approach is of great value to gain goodteaching result as well as train students’ ability in using English. But how isthis advanced teaching method used in English teaching in senior schools in Yunnan? What problems doEnglish teachers come across while applying this approach?
