The thesis attempts a brief comparative study of the culture of numbersin Chinese and English idioms and embodies the role of the culture in understandingand rendering and Chinese idioms. Numbers are not only used to show thequantity and the order of things but also exist in idioms as the method ofhyperbole or metaphor to make language vivid and lively. In the world ofscience, the function of numbers is to calculate. They stand for somethingaccurate, concrete and careful. However, in the daily life, their functionchanges a lot. In most cases, they do not show the order and the quantity, butrepresent abstract meanings. In all translating and interpreting thesource and target languages must be implicitly or explicitly compared.
