母语对中学生英语写作的干扰

1. Introduction

Today, with the development of economy, in manyparts of the world, people are required to be able to write in English, whetherEnglish is their first or second language. As a result, many teachers want todevelop students’ writing abilities. However, there are many writing differencesbetween English and Chinese. Chinese students always have much difficulty inexpressing appropriately and clearly in English. These problems are mainlycaused by the negative transfer of Chinese in Chinese students’ English writings.

Thisthesis mainly analyses the negative transfer of Chinese in the writing ofChinese students for the grammatical mistakes (tense, voice, number, case, articles and prepositions).  Thispaper has three points. First, we can find out ways to deal with the problem. Second,we can help the students to write more efficiently and accurately. Third, wecan improve the students’ writing ability.

2.Negative Transfer

In linguistics, the transfer of one’s nativelanguage on the second language learning is called the phenomenon of languagetransfer. The transfer of native language can be divided into negative transferand positive transfer (张在新, 1995). Most of thestudents’ problems in their English writings are caused by negative transfer ofChinese.     The main problems in Chinesestudents’ English writings are: too many grammatical mistakes (especially inthose grammatical phenomena which do not exist in Chinese such as tense, voice, number, case, articles and prepositions). These problems are mainly caused bythe negative transfer of Chinese in Chinese students’ English writings.

3.The Cause of Negative Transfer

Usually, Chinese students have many problems inEnglish writings. The causes are: Firstly, we learn English in Chinese speakingcircumstances. Secondly, many differences exist between China and English–speaking countries. Thirdly, Chinese and Englishbelong to two different language families, so the usages and expressions oftheir languages are very different. Therefore, Chinglishappears frequently in many Chinese students’ English writings. ( 徐晓光,2003 )
