By thenineteenth century, English had become the language of a worldwide empire, andit was beginning to be influenced by its worldwide context. (Gerry Knowles,1979) Nowadays, more and more Chinese also begin to learn English. As we allknow, English and Chinese belong to different language system, and both of themexists differences at many ways such as language structure and culturalbackground. Most of Chinese students begin to learn English as a foreign language(EFL) from Grade 1, middle school. At this period, they have learned and completelygrasped mother tongue, what is more, they have been used to thinking in mothertongue, so it is impossible to break away from mother tongue absolutely tolearn English. Chinese, as mother tongue, influences their English learningmore or less. With the influence of Chinese language, negative transferphenomenon of Chinese language often appears in Chinese middle school students’English learning. http://www.paper51.com This paper is designed to probeinto the influence of negative transfer of Chinese language on Chinese middleschool students’ English learning from three aspects of language structure, that is, pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. Through the comparison of English and Chineselanguage from these aspects, we can see many differences between English and Chineselanguage, and they are influencing Chinese students’ English learning. So it isnecessary for teachers to find out some methods to reduce negative transfer of Chineselanguage and to improve its positive transfer. In English teaching, firstlyteachers should focus on the comparison of English and Chinese language, andconclude these differences. Secondly they should point out students’ errorsproperly when negative transfer happens. Thirdly they should train students’thinking ability in English. copyright paper51.com |
