LiShangyin is one of major poets of the Late Tang Dynasty. Born in 812, he livedthrough the reign of Muzhong, Jingzhong, Wenzhong, Wuzhong and Xuanzhong, witnessing the decline of the Tang Dynasty. In the period he lived, the eunuchsmonopolized the power, warlords fought endlessly and people lived a poor life. LiShangyin was concerned with the political situation, but because of factionaldisputes he did not have a very successful career in the imperial civil serviceto achieve his ambition. Only through poem creation could he express obscurelyhis political ideas. Before he died in 858, he was set back many times. Theseexperiences are believed to have great influence on the allusive style of hispoem. 内容来自www.paper51.com
Li Shangyin was a prolific writer. Hewrote in many styles about a wide range of subjects involving history, politics, landscape and lyrics, and love. However, of his extant 98 works, thebest-known were many untitled poems. Throughout his life, he wrote about onehundred untitled poems. Some of these untitled poems describe intellectual’stragedies and sufferings under the ruler’s decadence and some describebeautiful women languishing for love. These sensuous love poems are mostpopular among readers. copyright paper51.com Hislove poems are mainly of two types: the first are obscure and vague, expressing his yearning for his lover;the second are emblematic poems expressing his indignation over the unfairfate. Because he liked to use words with deep meaning, which are often supposedto contain many political, biographical or philosophicalimplications, people have various opinions about these poems: are they justabout love, or do they have philosophical or political overtones? Until now, nofinal conclusion has been reached on the question. I think the ambiguity isexactly where the appeal of his poems lies but it constitutes great difficultyfor translators. The poem the paper studies is just one of suchuntitled poems: sensuous, dense and allusive. 内容来自论文无忧网 www.paper51.com |
