Teaching is the central task of a school. But in the courseof teaching, the following question must be taken into consideration: how topass on the content to the students, how to allot and make good use of theteaching time, how to organize the students and so on. As an English teacher,in English classroom teaching, being the designer, organizer and director,plays the leading role. For this reason, an English teacher must make goodplans and take proper steps to organize the teaching activities in each period.Obviously, presenting new content is the key part of classroom teaching. Itsmain task is to pass on new content to students and help them acquire theperceptual and rational knowledge of what they learn. We all know that thefirst step of achieving the task is to make students perceive the new contentand increase their interests in studying. But how to presentthe new content from unknown to know, from difficult to easy? Lead-inactivity becomes more and more important. Lead-in activity is also a kind ofclassroom teaching activity happens at the beginning before new contents arepresented. This step can make the new content specific, vivid and easy tounderstand. In particular, the knowledge that studentsget can leave a strong impression on them. Mao Zedong, to illustrate, oncesaid, “the elaboration of task is good for nothingwithout proper methods to realize them.”(董操 1998:186) It means that the intended objectives can hardlybe accomplished without effective methods. In teaching English, well-chosen andwell-designed lead-in activities are the key elements that determine thesuccessful completion of the programs. This article mainly talks about eight kindsof techniques of lead-in activity by using revision, questions, visual aids,situations, games, songs, plots of story and free talk.
