Introduction copyright paper51.com Thomas Hardy, as a novelist and poet, is famous for depictionsof the imaginary county "Wessex". Hardy's work reflected his stoicalpessimism and sense of tragedy in human life, and the theme of Tess’s ofthe d’Urberville conflicts with Victorian moralityand religion. Tess, the protagonist of the novel, is a beautiful, loyal youngwoman. Unfortunately, she is sullied by Alec d’Urberville. Later, she falls inlove with Angel Clare, but was abandoned by him. In order to live, she falls inthe clutches of Alec d’Urberville again. But her love for Angel Clare makes herkill Alec, and she is senteced to death. Tess is slaughtered by the capitalism, her suffering mirrors the trabedy of a lot of impoverished peasants. Thetragedy is caused by a lot of reasons: bourgeois concepts, the society of the VictorianTimes, hypocritical religion, and traditional moral biasat that time. http://www.paper51.com |
