paper51.com

Our life is filled with different cultures. As part of humanlanguage, idioms are the deposit and essence of culture, and different idiomsreflect different national forms. Idioms, which are closely related to our lifeand seen everywhere, not only enrich our culture and knowledge, but alsoreflect the differences of national forms. The phenomena they reflect are multi-leveland multiplex when English culture is constantly blending with our culture, especially, with culture of the U.K.and the U.S.A.;their uses are even entrusted with different feelings and cultural symbols. InEnglish and Chinese, many idioms are largely produced one after another anddifferent from each other, we not only understand idiomaticities, the meaningof idioms and of national form, but also focus our eyes on the national formsthat they reflect. Due to the differences between Western cultural backgroundand our cultural background, between the ways of conveying languages and so on,the national forms that they reflect are related to the cultures of English andChinese and produce some similarities and more differences. This thesis is tomake a contrastive study of the national forms of idioms between English andChinese.

Ⅰ. Introduction paper51.com

Theexpressions of idioms vocabulary are one of the most important essentials oflanguage and the basic element of language communication to a large extent.Language consists of grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary. However, it isinadequate for us only to know pronunciation and grammar on the grounds that weput our feelings, ideas and thoughts into words. As we all know that almostvery little can be conveyed without grammar and vocabulary. That is to say, idioms play a relatively important role in language. Besides, there are largeamounts of lexicons that are related to idioms in both English and Chinese.Lexicons are affected by their national cultures. They are alsosensitive to the cultural reflections of society. And they may arousecompletely dissimilar cultural senses and connotations. On the contrary, onaccount of different histories, customs, values, as well as religious beliefsbetween English-speaking countries and China, the English dittos don’tcompletely coincide with cultural connotations of idioms in Chinese.
