摘 要 委婉语是一种语言现象, 一种文化现象, 更是一种社会现象, 在一定程度上, 它反映了社会的价值观,审美观和美德观。委婉语在社会交际中发挥着重要作用。日常的约定俗成的委婉语能起润滑剂的作用，通过委婉语，可以避免语言过于直露而给对方造成伤害。它是语言使用中人们用来协调人际关系的有效润滑剂，是保全交际各方面的重要手段。很多中外学者曾从不同的角度对英语委婉语进行了长期的研究并取得了可喜的成果。本文主要研讨了委婉语的定义，语用功能，并从语用学的角度分析了委婉语的禁忌功能，替代功能，礼貌功能，掩盖功能以及褒扬功能。所以本文从语言学的角度，试图通过具体的例子来探究在特定的语言环境下英语委婉语的语用功能。只有认识委婉语在不同背景、不同环境下的使用方式，才能够调整好礼貌程度，从而把对方的伤害降到最低限度，以达到成功交际的目的。委婉语可以反映出各种各样的社会心理，从而也体现出了委婉语的各种交际功能。委婉语在各个领域都有广泛的应用，它有助于培养我们正确使用委婉语的意识,对帮助我们达到更有效的交际. paper51.com

In many works, we can findeuphemism. Actually, it is easy for us to find out that euphemism exists inevery aspect in our daily life, almost everyday we can meet or use it in manyassociations, not only in works. Whatever countries and times, people try toavoid mentioning certain notions or things directly, even when there is such aterm in the language. When such a notion or thing has to be referred to, thepractice will be substitute a different term or phrase that sounds better.Generally speaking, euphemism is used to create harmony and make conversationspleasant and smooth.
